こんにちは。今日は、私がどうしてもお伝えしたい「馬の耳」のお話です。
知らなかった？ ——馬の耳には「感情」があふれているんです。
馬と過ごす時間が少しずつ増えてきたある日、私は気づいてしまいました。
耳の動きひとつで、馬が「今どんな気持ちなのか」がわかるようになってきたことに。
ぴんと立てた耳、後ろへ寝かせた耳、左右バラバラに動く耳。 そのたびに「この子、何を感じてるのかな」と、私の心がそっと揺れるんです。
このブログでは、「馬の耳ってこんなに面白いんだよ」「だからもっと馬に会いたくなるよね」という気持ちを、同じように馬が好きな方や、これから出会いたい方と一緒に味わっていけたらうれしいなと思っています。
◆ 馬の耳は、小さなアンテナ
馬の耳って、左右別々に動かせるんです。
ぐるりと360度、まるで「どこに危険があるのかな？」「どこから声がしたのかな？」と探っているみたい。
でも実は、それだけじゃないんです。
耳の動きは「今、この瞬間にどう感じているか」のサインにもなっているんですよ。
・前を向いてピンと立っていたら…何かに興味を持っていたり、安心していたり。
・真横に開いていたら…ちょっと緊張してるのかも。
・後ろに寝かせていたら…ご機嫌ななめだったり、集中できていなかったり。
・少しだけ倒れているときは…ほっとしていたり、気を抜いてるのかもしれません。
耳は、言葉のない馬たちが、いちばんたくさん気持ちを伝えてくれるところなんですね。
◆ 耳から知る、馬の文化
ネイティブアメリカンの馬文化では、馬の耳の動きが「心の状態」を表すものとして大切にされてきました。
ウエスタンライディングでも、耳の動きから「この子、今何を考えてる？」をくみとることは、とても大事な観察ポイントになります。
じつは世界中どこでも、馬の耳を大切に見る目があるんですね。
なんだか、それだけで馬ってすごいなぁって思ってしまいます。
◆ 私が出会った“耳の記憶”
ある日のこと。いつもの乗馬クラブで、ひとりのスタッフさんが言いました。
「耳を見てごらん。あの子、あなたのこと見てるよ」
その馬は、たしかに私に顔を向けていたわけではなかったけれど、耳がぴたっと私の方に向いていたんです。
そのとき、「この子、私のことちゃんと気にしてくれてるんだ」って涙が出るほど嬉しくて。
それからというもの、私は馬と会うたびにまず耳を見て、その気持ちを感じるようにしています。
そして馬が眠っているとき、耳をゆるめてくっつけていたり、仲良し同士で耳をふんわり向け合っていたりすると、それだけで「なんて優しい世界なんだろう」って胸がいっぱいになるんです。

The Charm of a Horse’s Ears
Hello! Today, I want to share something I just can’t keep to myself: a story about horse ears.
Never noticed them before?
—Horse ears are full of emotions.
As I began spending more time with horses, I started to notice something. Just by watching their ears move, I could tell how they were feeling at that very moment.
Perked-up ears, pinned-back ears, ears moving in different directions…
Each little movement made me wonder, “What is this horse feeling right now?”—and I found my own heart gently stirred.
In this blog, I hope to share the joy of discovering “Just how fascinating horse ears can be!” with fellow horse lovers—or those who are just about to meet a horse for the first time.
◆ A Horse’s Ears: Tiny Antennas
Did you know that horses can move their ears independently? They can swivel 360 degrees, as if they’re asking, “Where’s the danger?” or “Where did that sound come from?”
But that’s not all.
The movement of their ears also gives us a glimpse into their feelings in that very moment.
- If their ears are pointed forward… they might be curious or feeling safe.
- If they’re out to the side… the horse might be a bit tense or alert.
- If the ears are pinned back… it could mean the horse is upset or unable to focus.
- If they’re relaxed and drooping slightly… the horse may be calm and at ease.
For horses, who can’t speak, their ears are one of the clearest ways they express their feelings.
◆ Learning Culture Through Ears
In Native American horse culture, the movements of a horse’s ears were respected as indicators of the horse’s emotional state.
In Western riding, too, reading a horse’s ears is a key part of understanding what the horse is thinking.
Turns out, all around the world, people have been watching horse ears with care. Doesn’t that alone make you feel like horses are truly remarkable?
◆ My Personal “Ear Memory”
One day at the riding club, a staff member said to me:
“Look at the ears—she’s watching you.”
The horse wasn’t facing me directly, but her ears were pointed straight toward me.
In that moment, I felt tears well up—it was like she was saying, “I see you.” And that simple realization made me incredibly happy.
Since then, whenever I meet a horse, I start by looking at their ears—trying to feel what they might be feeling.
When I see a horse dozing with soft, cuddly ears, or two horses pointing their ears gently toward one another, I think, “What a gentle world this is,” and my heart fills with warmth.
◆ Why Not Go Watch Some Horse Ears Yourself?
