初めての乗馬体験で、そんなことを口にした友人がいました。最初は冗談かと思いましたが、馬の顔をじっと見ていると、確かに口元がゆるんだり、目を細めたりする瞬間があります。
馬の表情って、実はとても豊かなんです。
私たちは犬や猫の表情の変化には敏感なのに、なぜか馬に対しては「無表情」というイメージを抱きがち。でも、少し観察してみると、耳の向き、目の輝き、鼻の動き、口元の緊張感…それら全部が馬の“気持ち”を語っているのです。

馬の感情表現はとっても繊細
馬はもともと草食動物として生き延びてきた背景があり、周囲の変化に敏感です。そして、群れで生活する動物なので、非言語コミュニケーションの達人でもあります。表情やしぐさで自分の気持ちや周囲への警戒、仲間との信頼関係を伝え合ってきたんですね。
たとえば、こんなサイン、見たことはありませんか？
- 目を細めてうっとりした表情：リラックスしている証拠。人間でいう「安心しているときの微笑み」のようなもの。
- 耳がピンと前向き：何かに興味を示している時。好奇心がわいている状態。
- 耳が後ろに寝ている：不快感、怒り、警戒。人との関係を見直す必要があるかもしれません。
- 鼻をフガフガ鳴らす：少し興奮気味。新しい環境やニオイに反応しているときにも見られます。
こうした表情を読み取れるようになると、「この子、いま何を感じてるのかな？」と想像する楽しみが生まれ、馬との距離がグッと縮まるんです。
馬との信頼関係は“表情”から始まる
私自身、最初は馬の反応に戸惑ってばかりでした。近づくと顔をそむけられたり、耳を後ろに向けられたり…「嫌われてるのかな？」と落ち込むこともありました。
でも、ある日、ブラッシングをしていたとき、ある馬がそっと目を細めて、鼻先を私の肩に乗せてきたんです。そのとき、全身がじんわり温かくなるような感覚を覚えました。
「あ、今この子、安心してくれてるんだ」
そんな風に感じられた瞬間こそが、信頼のはじまり。
信頼は、馬が自分の身を預けても大丈夫だと判断したときにだけ見せてくれる「緩んだ表情」や「穏やかな目つき」に現れます。
馬の“生きている表情”をもっと見てみたくなる
こうした経験を重ねていくと、「もっといろんな馬に出会って、その表情を見てみたい！」という気持ちが自然と湧いてきます。
実際、私は週末に地元の乗馬クラブやホースセラピーのボランティアに参加するようになってから、色んな性格、表情、しぐさを持った馬たちに出会いました。のんびり屋さんもいれば、ちょっと神経質な子もいる。人懐っこくてすぐに顔を寄せてくる子、遠巻きに見つめてくる子…。
どの馬も本当に個性的で、同じ表情はひとつとしてないんです。
「この子がどんな気持ちでいるのか、もっと知りたい」 「この馬と、もっと信頼関係を築いてみたい」
そんな想いが芽生えたら、それは馬があなたに心を開きはじめたサインかもしれません。
あのとき見せてくれた、あの表情を忘れない
ある日のこと。少し怖がりな芦毛の馬がいて、最初は触るのも時間がかかる子でした。でも、回数を重ねるうちに、私の足音を聞いただけで顔をこちらに向けてくれるようになって、あるときには私の手に自分から鼻を押し付けてくれました。
そのときの目が、ほんとうに優しかった。
「ああ、信じてくれてる」
そう確信した瞬間でした。
その記憶は、今でも私の心の中に温かく残っています。馬の表情が、ただの“動物のしぐさ”ではなく、言葉に代わる大切な「心のサイン」なんだと気づかせてくれた体験です。

On my very first horseback riding experience, a friend suddenly said,
“Hey, didn’t that horse just smile?”
At first, I thought it was a joke. But as I looked closely at the horse’s face, I noticed moments when its lips softened or its eyes narrowed, almost like an expression of joy.
The truth is—horses actually have very rich facial expressions.
We are quick to notice changes in the expressions of dogs and cats, yet for some reason, we tend to imagine horses as “expressionless.” But if you take a moment to observe them, you’ll see their ears, their eyes, their nostrils, and even the tension around their mouths all tell stories about how they’re feeling.
In this blog, I’d like to share some hints on how to read a horse’s emotions through its expressions—and together, let’s explore why we are so deeply drawn to these magnificent animals.
Horses Speak Through Subtle Expressions
As prey animals, horses have survived by being highly sensitive to changes in their surroundings. They also live in herds, which means they’ve become masters of nonverbal communication. Through expressions and gestures, they share their feelings, their alerts, and their trust with one another.
Have you ever noticed these signs?
- Half-closed, dreamy eyes: A sign of deep relaxation—like a human’s gentle smile when they feel safe.
- Ears pricked forward: Curiosity and interest in something new.
- Ears pinned back: Discomfort, anger, or warning. A sign to reassess the relationship.
- Snorting or blowing through the nostrils: Excitement or reacting to something unfamiliar.
Once you start noticing these signals, it becomes fun to wonder, “What is this horse feeling right now?” And that curiosity draws you closer to them.
Trust Begins With a Look
At first, I was often confused by a horse’s reactions. Some would turn their heads away or pin their ears back when I approached. I even wondered, “Does this horse dislike me?”
But then one day, while brushing a horse, something changed. The horse gently closed its eyes and rested its nose on my shoulder.
At that moment, a warm, quiet feeling spread through me.
“Ah… this horse feels safe with me.”
That was the very beginning of trust.
Horses only show that softened face or gentle gaze when they’ve decided it’s safe to let their guard down. Those “relaxed expressions” are the purest signs of trust.
Each Horse Has a Unique Face
The more experiences I had, the more I wanted to meet different horses and see their expressions.
Volunteering at local riding clubs and horse therapy programs introduced me to many personalities: calm and easygoing ones, nervous and sensitive ones, affectionate ones who came close right away, and shy ones who preferred to watch from a distance.
Every single horse had its own way of expressing itself—and no two faces were ever the same.
When you start thinking, “I want to understand what this horse is feeling” or “I want to build more trust with this horse,” that’s often the sign that the horse is beginning to open its heart to you.
The Expression I’ll Never Forget
There was a gray horse I met who was quite timid. At first, it took a long time just to touch him. But after many visits, he began to turn his head toward me when he heard my footsteps. One day, he pressed his nose gently into my hand.
The look in his eyes at that moment was incredibly soft.
“He trusts me.”
I’ll never forget that feeling.
That memory still warms my heart, and it reminded me that horses’ expressions are not just “animal gestures”—they are precious signs of the heart.
